The Proteus Principle

Core Definition
From Book 4: the discipline of holding attention steady through transformation until all shapes exhaust and the underlying reality reveals itself.
The Proteus Principle suggests that each wound is a shape that attention assumes under pressure. The wisdom of the return lies in holding attention steady through each shape without becoming identified with it — witnessing each configuration as a temporary form that attention has taken.
Book-by-Book Extensions
Book 10 — Internal Transformation
Tested not by external shape-shifting but by the internal transformation of the friction collapse.
Book 12 — The Four Trials
Tested by the external transformations of the trials — song to strait to cattle to fig tree.
Books 16–24
In each book of the return, the Proteus Principle is tested by the rapid transformations that recognition, threshold crossing, disguise, and reunion produce. The discipline shifts from the grip of the wrestler to the flexibility of one who moves between identities without losing integrity.
