The Sacrifice Protocol is the practice of giving back what sustains you, maintaining the cycle of reciprocity that prevents attention from becoming extraction.
In the Odyssey, this protocol is illustrated through contrast. The suitors in Ithaca violate it: they consume without offering, they take without returning. Their attention is coupled to a depleting field that will eventually collapse.
Nestor’s people maintain the protocol. They give back. They sustain the field. Their attention is coupled to a renewing pattern that generates more than it consumes.
The cycle of reciprocity
The protocol describes a fundamental pattern in the Academy’s understanding of attention:
- Attention coupled to extraction depletes the field it draws from. This is the suitors’ pattern.
- Attention coupled to reciprocity sustains and even enriches the field. This is Nestor’s pattern.
- The sacrifice is not loss but maintenance — the cost of keeping the field alive.
Open Question
The Sacrifice Protocol is an interpretation drawn from the contrast between the suitors and Nestor’s people. Whether this constitutes a general principle of attention or a specific Homeric observation is an open question.
